SONET – More Popular Than Ever

SONET is the crucial link to your network’s successful deployment. SONET advocates have developed packet-over-SONET standards that enable existing SONET infrastructure to deliver packet services. GFP, VCAT, LCAS, and RPR provide a common technology framework for mapping/managing packet traffic in SONET circuits. The ability to efficiently carry TDM traffic (DS-1’s, DS-3’s, etc.) and packet traffic (up to 10G) enables a true converged network; service providers are able to unlock new revenue streams without major additional capital investment.

Scalability questions have historically been answered when the market demands it. OC-48 and OC-192 standards developed and became cost effective only when the market created real revenue opportunities. OC-768 components are already in use, and waiting for market forces to drive the costs down to a point where deployment is widespread. Additionally, selected use of wavelength services components in conjunction with SONET equipment can solve today’s bandwidth needs.
